Program of Work

Governmental Development provides opportunities for members to become informed on legislative issues and pro actively support Big Spring and Howard County and the business community to/with the appropriate governmental entities. The Chamber will continue to sponsor local public forums. Members are informed when state and national leaders hold meetings on latest issues facing our community. The Chamber will continue to be involved with Ports to Plains, Downtown Main Street, and Howard County Day in Austin.

Membership Development strives to achieve positive growth of membership through retention, recruitment and communication while functioning as the goodwill arm of the organization. A membership directory will be published listing all members of the Chamber, categorized by business type, to be used as an informative and recruiting tool for the businesses of our community. Members are encouraged to participate in Chamber Member Mailer, Relocation Packets, and other incentives offered.

Community Affairs is keyed to providing the community with programs, business information, and networking through events throughout the year. The Chamber continues to offer health awareness to citizens by sponsoring the Health Fair. The Chamber also recognizes the agricultural industry by providing support of the Ag Expo and Ag Appreciation Luncheon to offer education and appreciation to our farming community. One of the most successful programs is Leadership Big Sprung and Jr. Leadership. Both programs continue to prosper and improve at providing the leaders of tomorrow with the knowledge and skills to insure the future of Big Spring.

Business Development strengthens, expands, and maintains all business sectors of the Chamber. Awareness to buy local and promote cooperation in the retail businesses in order to increase income will continue. Emphasis will be placed on supporting services and industries as well, allowing focus to be placed on education and assistance for all existing businesses of the Chamber.

Cultural/Tourism Development helps promote events that go on in Howard County whether it be through psa’s media announcements, selling tickets to events, posting materials in the office, mass emailing members, Facebook, hanging banners or posting events to the community calendar. Debbie Wegman, with the Convention and Visitors Bureau serves in this position and works with the chamber to not only have events for the community but to promote tourism in our community. Both Debbie Wegman and Debbye ValVerde are on the Texas Plains Trail Board where ideas are shared and borrowed through networking.
